A quick stop in Hong Kong March 4-6

Hong Kong

On March 4 we left Vietnam and took a plane to Hong Kong.

We arrived at 10:30pm and then took a city bus to the city. It was a double decker bus and we got the top front seats, it was so amazing how many lights there were.

Enjoying the front seat view of the city from the double decker bus!

Some of the cool neon lights

Neon lights lit up the whole city.  The government even asked everyone to turn the lights off at 12:00am so that people could go to sleep because they found that the light pollution was making people not sleep well.

We were all excited to see the city but not sure about the room we were staying in. It was in a sketchy building called Mirador Mansion and the room was 9 square meters! We stayed there because rooms in Hong Kong are so expensive but the ones at the "mansion" cost a decent amount. It was a very tight squeeze but luckily we were only in the room when we went to bed  and we were only staying there for 2 nights.

Our cosy room - the landlady told us that the big bed was a "Hong Kong Double" - which is slightly larger than a regular twin bed, and the twin beds are similar to travel trailer bunkbed size.

The next day we went on the star ferry that has been running since 1873 across the harbour to Hong Kong Island.  It was in good condition and didn't seem that old, but the seats and things were all wooden.  It was busy but gave us some good views of the city.

Several of these Star Ferries run back and forth from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island all day every day, and have been for over 100 years.

Hong Kong skyline from the ferry - yes, it's foggy, or maybe smoggy, we weren't sure at first

We arrived on Hong Kong Island and explored for awhile.

Central Pier, Hong Kong, there is a nice walkway along the water from here

A huge ferris wheel that we decided not to go on, we're holding out for the Eye of London!

We took another double decker bus (and waited for the front seats again) to the top of a mountain called Victoria Peak.  We did an easy "hike" on a road around the mountain over looking the city.  We didn't see far because it was kind of smoggy, but the views were ok.

these buses are pretty nice

A different platform that you could pay lots to go on

Clouds and smog in the view, but it is still pretty good

Every night there is a light show! We stood on one side of the harbour and the light show was on the other! It was about 20 mins long and all the lights went with the beat of the music.  There were lasers that hit some buildings on the other side of the harbour! It was really cool to watch!

Lots of the buildings have laser lights off the top

Some other memories of Hong Kong:

Lucas was drooling over these cars

We went to a grocery store - there were lots of new foods that we were a little unsure of!

it was fun walking the streets in Hong Kong, there were lots of fancy shops

cool neon signs

There was lots to see around Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront

Fact:  Did you know that Hong Kong was ruled by the British until 1997 when their 99 year lease finished and they had to return it to China.  Hong Kong is now a "special administrative region" of China because they have their own rules, money and other things.
